Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. announced that the Kratos’ XQ-58A Valkyrie completed its maiden flight on March 5, 2019 at Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona.

Kratos Unmanned Aerial Systems (KUAS) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) partnered on the development of the XQ-58A Valkyrie. The XQ-58A demonstrator is described as a low-cost unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

Kratos explains the vehicle completed its test objectives during a 76-minute flight. The Valkyrie is a runway-independent UAV capable of long-range flights at high-subsonic speeds.

The joint effort falls within the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Low Cost Attritable Aircraft Technology (LCAAT) portfolio, which Kratos explains as having an objective to break the escalating cost trajectory of tactically relevant aircraft.
